Serving the Lord in the Dominican Republic

Bio

Vicar Gavin Johnson serves the Lord through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) as a missionary in the Dominican Republic. As a vicar on the international mission field, Gavin preaches the Word of God, visits with the local people to show them the love of Christ and assists with the liturgy during worship services . Gavin ministers to God’s people by spreading the Gospel and doing mercy work.

Gavin is from Grand Rapids, Mich., and his home congregation is St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. Gavin graduated from the Compass College of Film and Media in 2022, earning his B.F.A. in film and media production, and he is currently a student at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. In the summer of 2022, Gavin did freelance commercial work for the state of Michigan to promote tourism. He did his seminary fieldwork at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Arnold, Mo. (2023–2025). In his free time, Gavin enjoys being on the water, singing, pottery and spending time with loved ones.

Prayers

Pray for Gavin as he serves in the Dominican Republic. Ask God to grant him wisdom, safety, peace and strength as he transitions to a new country. May he never cease to find joy in showing the love of Christ to the world. Pray for all those Gavin meets, that their hearts will be open to the message of Jesus and His mercy. May the church in the Dominican Republic grow according to God’s will. Give thanks to God for sending Gavin to serve His children in this part of the world.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 14 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
