LCMS World Mission began supporting work in Angola in 1997 in partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB). In 2001, the IELB sent Carlos Walter Winterle, president of the IELB, and Professor Mario Rost to Angola to teach intensive courses and to mentor a local pastor in leading the Angolan church's Theological Education by Extension (TEE) program. This partnership is based in Portuguese—a common language for both the IELB and the Confessional Lutheran Church in Angola.
LCMS missionaries, along with representatives of the IELB and the Free Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa, are planning an active partnership to train leaders in the emerging Portuguese-language Lutheran church body in Angola and Mozambique.
LCMS World Relief and Human Care has provided grants for projects that support the development of sewing classes, vegetable gardens with water pumps and a health center.
