New CD of “Hope” for South Africa

LCMS World Relief and Human Care has released a CD featuring vocalist Erin Bode with the “Themba Girls,” a girls school choir of young South Africans. Proceeds from the recording will benefit the Themba Trust, the nonprofit foundation that operates the school and other educational and youth development programs serving South Africa’s rural poor.
“We want to shed light on the plight of these girls and raise awareness of a faith-based organization that is doing great things in the midst of one of the world’s most difficult situations,” said Rev. Matthew Harrison, executive director of LCMS World Relief and Human, the mercy arm of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS).
This inspiring CD includes Zulu sacred songs and beloved American hymns “Go My Children With My Blessing” and “Were You There”. It features original songs penned by Bode and the band while they were in Themba.
To help capture a week Bode calls “amazing” and “life changing,” the CD is sprinkled with sound bites: Trustee Reinhild Niebuhr introducing each of the Themba Girls by name, church bells ringing, birds chirping. Also on the CD is a music video shot in South Africa that shows breathtaking scenery and beautiful music—and friendships—in the making.
“We wanted to give people the opportunity to feel what we felt, to share this wonderful experience with these beautiful and amazing girls,” Bode said.
Since 1989, LCMS World Relief and Human Care has provided grants to the foundation whose name, “Themba,” (pronounced TEM-bah) means “hope” in the language of the Zulu, the predominant South African tribe in the area served by the foundation.
Harrison conceived the idea of introducing Bode to the “Themba Girls” when he was in South Africa and heard the students sing. Their pure, joyful music made the LCMS World Relief and Human Care director think of Bode, a popular artist who has recorded two CDs and performs internationally.
Themba is based in a village southeast of Johannesburg in a country with great poverty and limited education opportunities. HIV/AIDS turns children into orphans.
