Driesch, Hans Adolf Eduard

(1867–1941). Ger. biologist and philos.; experiments led him to support a dynamic vitalism which held that life cannot be explained as physical or chemical phenomena, but that every organism has its own entelechy (something that contains or realizes an end or final cause). Works include Leib und Seele.
