Studied at Halle 1859–61; Göttingen, Tübingen, and Berlin 1865–66. Pastor Davenport, Iowa, 1858–59; Erie, Pennsylvania, 1861–62, 1863–65; Indianapolis, Indiana, 1867–68; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1868–73. Chaplain in Civil War 1862–63. Prof. Wittenberg Coll. 1873–80. Pastor Am. Ch. in Berlin 1880–94; lectured in Am. 1892. To US 1894; made his home at North Cambridge, Massachusetts Works include The History of the Augsburg Confession, from Its Origin till the Adoption of the Formula of Concord; Christian Sociology; The Social Problem.
