Prayer for June 5, 2005

Prayer of the Church
Pentecost 3
June 5, 2005

P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

P Lord God, Your love is great and Your faithfulness endures forever. Grant that the Holy Gospel and the faithful preaching of it may be received in faith throughout Your Church and lead all who hear it to glorify You with their tongues and in their lives. Prepare those who are taught the faith to defend it from false teachers and from worldly deceivers. And among those who trust in Your Son, Jesus Christ, grant unity—a unity that rests on Your Word and Your grace. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

P O Lord, through ordinary men and women You rule the nations of the earth. Give to the leaders of this world the wisdom necessary to administer justice, to protect the downtrodden and helpless, and to put others before one’s self. Watch over all those who serve in the armed forces of our country. Help them also to discern wisely what it means to protect, defend and to help those in need. Lord, in Your mercy:
C hear our prayer.

P O Lord, through Your servant David You declared that You contend for the humble but bring down the self-righteous. Help us to remember that we are not above those who in need. Through our vocations, as well as through the agencies of our church and this community, enable us to serve the poor, the hungry, the homeless, and the unemployed. Grant an extra measure of patience to social workers as they daily seek ways to attend to the desperate needs of all the distressed. Lord, in Your mercy:
C hear our prayer.

P O Lord, as another school year comes to a close, we give You thanks for the many opportunities we have to educate our children. Bless the children of our land that they may be encouraged toward a lifetime of learning. Guide the teachers and administrators of our schools that they may dedicate themselves toward excellence in their vocations. Whether in public or parochial schools, help all believers in Your Son to recognize the opportunities they have to witness to Your saving deeds. Lord, in Your mercy:
C hear our prayer.

P O Lord, look upon the physical needs of those we bring before You this day (especially _____________). Grant healing to their bodies, according to Your will. Through Your Word and Spirit, attend to their fears and worries so that they may not despair over their condition but find a sure and certain hope in Your promise always to hear, always to help, always to save. Lord, in Your mercy:
C hear our prayer.

P O Lord, teach us to give thanks to You for all the blessings of body and soul that You graciously give us (especially ______________). In the midst of the trials of this life, enable us to trust solely in You and to offer You our thanks and praise in every circumstance, knowing that from You alone come godly contentment and peace. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

Other petitions are offered as there is need.

P O Lord, You bid us to come to Your banquet table and there You serve us the very life won by Your Son on the cross. Dispel our reservations and our doubts with the sure and certain promise that, through ordinary bread and wine, You give us Your body and blood for the strengthening of our faith. Fed and nourished by Your forgiveness, guide us in the week ahead to be ever mindful of Your unfathomable love for us, and open our eyes to see the ways in which we can serve You by serving our neighbor. Lord, in Your mercy:
C hear our prayer.

P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C Amen.
