During the military conflict between Georgia and Russia in August 2008, a man, his 10 children, and 30 grandchildren were forced to flee their homes. They, and many others, escaped with little but the clothes on their backs and whatever they could carry, finding refuge in Georgia’s two largest cities, Tbilisi and Kutaisi.
With a $25,000 grant from LCMS World Relief and Human Care, Lutheran Hour Ministries’ Middle East Lutheran Ministries (MELM) workers help families like this with vital material goods, medical assistance, and spiritual care.
"Seeing the suffering of the refugees firsthand, I have never been prouder of our church. Through the service of LCMS World Relief [and Human Care] we can make a difference in the lives of people," said Rev. Matthew Heise, an LCMS missionary who helped distribute the goods.
