Material donations are requested by LCMS partners MISSION: HAITI, Lutheran Church Charities, and Orphan Grain Train for shipment to Haiti in response to the Jan. 12 earthquake. LCMS World Relief and Human Care will assist these Lutheran partners with overseas shipping charges.
MISSION: HAITI
On Tuesday, MISSION: HAITI, Inc., sent three 40-foot shipping containers on their way to Port-au-Prince. An estimated seven more containers will be loaded with donated supplies and sent by boat to Port-au-Prince in the coming days and weeks.
Helen Roenfeldt, treasurer with MISSION: HAITI, oversees the material goods efforts at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Davie, Fla. She says the outpouring of care and concern from all over the country has "just been amazing." Churches in Texas, Michigan, Ohio, and California have sent full semi-trucks of supplies. Roenfeldt even received three packages from missionaries in Taiwan.
On Wednesday, more than 1,000 boxes filled the Gloria Dei church sanctuary, hallways, and fellowship hall. Volunteers from "every age range" and four or five different congregations sorted the items for shipment.
