Church Year Calendar

Click on one of the links above to access further information on the LSB Church Year calendar.

The church year calendar is organized into three sections: Sundays and seasons, feasts and festivals, and commemorations.

Sundays and Seasons. A single calendar has been developed for both the one- and three-year lectionaries. Though these two lectionaries differ in several places, the proposed calendar nicely handles the differences in a simple manner.

Feasts and Festivals. This calendar, previously called “Minor Festivals” in LW, contains all of the high feasts and saints’ observances. Using the calendar in LW as a starting point, the Lectionary committee made the following revisions:

Three dates have been added to the calendar:

St. Joseph, Guardian of Our Lord (March 19)

St. John the Baptizer (August 29)

St. James of Jerusalem, Martyr (October 23)

Several commemorations previously on the LW calendar have been moved to the Calendar of Commemorations. These include:

Martin Luther (February 18)

C.F.W. Walther (May 7)

Presentation of the Augsburg Confession (June 25)

St. Laurence (August 10)

Readings and other propers for the feasts and festivals have been prepared. For each day there is an introit, collect, gradual, verse, and hymn suggestions.

In addition to the saints’ days, readings and propers have been developed for a number of special occasions, such as a Day of National Thanksgiving, Mission Festival, etc.

Commemorations. The primary reason for including the calendar of commemorations is nicely summarized by the following:

The purpose of our remembrance is not that we honor these saints for their own sake, but as examples of those in whom the saving work of Jesus Christ has been made manifest to the glory of His holy name and to the praise of His grace and mercy.

The Lectionary committee prepared explanatory notes on each of the persons and events included on the calendar. To access these explanations, click on Commemorations above and then click on Biographies.
