Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, affectionately referred to by members as OSELC, was founded in 1939 as a Bible study group led by Pastor Henry Sheperle. In the early days of OSELC, the Bible studies were held in the homes of various members and eventually began to meet in an old storefront not far from where the church is currently located. Only a few short years later, and after WWII, OSELC acquired its current location and has been located there ever since.

Having been initially founded as a "negro-mission," Our Savior is credited as being the first predominately African-American Lutheran church in the Indianapolis area to target the African-American demographic of that time to bring them the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since that time, OSELC has evolved into a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural congregation whose primary mission is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people and inspire within them the hope we have through our salvation in Jesus Christ.

OSELC has a rich history and is known for the welcoming and warm atmosphere that is experienced during time spent at the church. After more than 75 years, OSELC is more dedicated than ever to preaching, teaching and reaching out.

Fast Facts: Unity Community Lutheran Church & Mission Children’s Outreach - located in Pittsburg, PA. “..Let the Children come to me; Don’t try to stop them.” This is the overarching theme of the ministry of Unity’s mission work to the 5 to 16 year old children in the Homewood community of Pittsburg, PA. “Unity serves as a safe haven for our children, who would otherwise be on the street corners or playing in the alleyways, to learn about life, have fun and enjoy a hot meal,” said Rev. McCants. Through tutoring, nurturing, mentoring, spiritual guidance, fellowship, unity/peace and a balanced meal, many young lives are supported and changed for the better. Pastor McCants said, “We at Unity try to fill as many needs as possible, realizing that many of our children are lacking in many areas.” One young student said, “I started at Unity’s Children Outreach Program at age ten. I came from a foster home with my sister and, the programs offered gave me so many options that I never knew existed to help me grow educationally and spiritually…The Outreach program is a vital component to our community because it keeps the kids off the streets and gives them a safe environment where they can play, learn and dream the impossible dream, to believe they are loved, and to want to excel in everything that brings glory to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. By having role models such as Rev. and Mrs. McCants, kids like me can set goals (such as furthering their education) and believe that with God all things are possible. I expect to see Unity’s Outreach Program still blessing young lives 50 years from now and beyond.”

Fast Facts:
One of our greatest success stories has been with our Evangelism Outreach Ministry. We incorporated Rev.  Poulson’s session from the 2013 Leadership Conference titled Christ Care: Changing Church Members to  Disciples of Jesus.  The Team goes out to the downtown area of Dallas, TX, where homelessness is very  prevalent. They witness, pray, encourage, and provide Bibles, shoes, clothing, coats, personal hygiene items, water and snacks to approximately 50 – 75 people on a monthly basis. They have also gone to various communities and  apartment complexes in the DFW Metroplex to witness and share the Good News of our Lord and Savior  Jesus Christ.  This past summer, through their efforts of witnessing and evangelizing in those communities, our  attendance for VBS  ranged between 60 – 80 participants. Jesus has given us the command in Matthew 28:19- 20…” Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son  and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Another success story is St. Paul Women’s Ministries:  The Women of Righteous Destiny(W.O.R.D.) and our Lutheran Women Missionary League (LWML)continue to reach women of all ages, who have been broken, abandoned, and persecuted by life’s trials and tribulations.  The women gather monthly for Bible Study and fellowship.  In addition  to the monthly gatherings, the Women’s Ministries host quarterly events each year, bringing women together from all walks of life to empower, encourage, equip and remind them that God loves them.  The women have learned from Proverbs 3:5-6..”To trust in the Lord with all their hearts and lean not to their own understanding, in all their ways, acknowledge Him, and he will make their paths straight.”

Pray for:

  • Annual Leadership Conference – January 17th – 18th, 2014
  • Monthly Evangelism Outreach – 1st Saturday
  • Monthly Women’s (W.O.R.D.) Fellowship – 3rd Saturday
  • Increase spiritual growth throughout the Body of Christ
  • Send more men that are (faithful, available & teachable);  men that are willing to take their rightful places in their families and in the Church
  • Healing and strength for our sick and shut-ins
  • Debt free

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
