Mozambique

  •  Country Summary
  • The Rev. Josef Alfazema is a native of Mozambique who was trained and ordained by the Lutheran Church—Canada (LCC). He was being supported by the LCC’s Kapasseni Project when he began the mission in 2006 that led to the establishment of the Igreja Luterana da Concórdia em Moçambique (ILCM), or the Lutheran Church of Concord in Mozambique. He retired from the field and returned to Canada in 2011 due to health issues, but he continues to make short trips to minister and teach in Mozambique. Currently, a memorandum of understanding exists between the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB); the Mission of the Lutheran Churches in Germany; the Free Evangelical Lutheran Synod in South Africa; Redeemer Lutheran Church in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to provide theological education to pastors of the congregations in this emerging Portuguese-language Lutheran church body. Professors from the IELB provide training in Portuguese, and the LCMS provides funding for their travel and for projects. The first eight pastors in the ILCM were ordained in August 2015 after six years of training. At that time, 20 additional men began their pastoral training. The ILCM has more than two dozen congregations and around 1,600 members.
