What Does the Name "Lutheran" Mean?
Journal of Lutheran Mission - March 2014
Doctrine
The central teaching or doctrine of Scripture is the justification of sinners by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. From this central hub, all doctrine and teaching extends. It is, therefore, not a lifeless teaching but the vivifying Word of God that brings sinners into fellowship with the almighty God.
Christ and Culture
Christians live in the world, but not of the world. To live as faithful witnesses requires learning how to interpret the world from a Lutheran perspective, how to make a bold confession of Christ before the world, that He might draw all unto Himself.
Church History
Jesus Christ came to earth as a flesh-and-blood man and lived a historical life, suffering and dying “under Pontius Pilate” as we confess in the Apostles’ Creed. As Lutherans, we cherish the history of the church, seeing in it how our Lord has guided and protected His church through the last 2,000 years.
Reformation
The following resources highlight the history, theology and continued effects of the Reformation today.
Synod History
As with all of church history, the LCMS’ history is replete with sinners and saints who struggled and learned, repented and forgave. We cherish our forebears in the faith as examples for us from whom we still learn.
Early Church History
Early church history spans the time from the Ascension of our Lord (A.D. 30) until the legalization and spread of Christianity in the Roman empire (around A.D. 400).
Global Work
The LCMS sent its first international missionary in 1894 and has not looked back since. Now, over 100 LCMS missionaries spread the Gospel, plant Lutheran churches and show mercy in over 30 countries around the globe.
Human Care
The church follows in the example of Christ who fed the hungry, healed the sick and cared for those in need. Since Christ died for us, we likewise show mercy to those in need, all the while pointing them to Him who died on the cross for their sake and who delivers eternal healing and mercy in the proclamation of His Word.
Church Work Vocation
Through His church, Christ calls servants for His church. The church, therefore, seeks to ensure that the youths of our congregations are encouraged to consider church work, that we prepare and equip our students to serve the church, and that we support our church workers as they serve.
Church Administration
Christ maintains a congregation through Word and Sacrament, giving life and vitality through His Word proclaimed and delivered.
