About

The Rev. Dr. John W. Sias has served as secretary of the Synod since 2016. Prior to that, he was a pastor (to Colstrip first, then to Forsyth and Hysham, in addition) in eastern Montana from 2009-2016. He serves on the Commission for Constitutional Matters (2013-present), the LCMS Board of Directors, the Commission on Handbook, and the Board of Governors for Concordia Historical Institute. He has also served as a circuit visitor and district vice-president; on the Synod's Committee for Convention Nominations (2013); and in volunteer positions and on boards of Lutheran scholarly, editing and publishing concerns.

Sias holds B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois in electrical and computer engineering. His 2009 M.Div. is from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. There he met his wife, Heidi, who is a deaconess and originally from Rolling Meadows, Ill. (He's from Rock Island.) They live in the St. Louis area. He enjoys being a pastor (such as present duties allow), studying the Scriptures and Lutheran Confessions, languages — both human and computer — and advancing good church governance.
