Rev. Sergio Maita and Yoxandris Marcano de Maita

Church Planter and Theological Educator

Serving the Lord in Puerto Rico

Bio

The Rev. Sergio Maita and his wife, Yoxandris, serve the Lord as missionaries through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), based in Puerto Rico. As a church planter and theological educator, Sergio serves a new church plant in San Juan, where he connects with people to help bring them into the church. He is also a professor at Concordia the Reformer Seminary in Palmar Arriba, Dominican Republic, a position he has held since the seminary opened in 2017.

Sergio is from Maturín, Venezuela. One of the first Lutheran churches planted by the LCMS in Venezuela was established near his grandparents’ house. As a result, he was raised Lutheran. Sergio attended the Juan de Frías Bible Institute as well as a pastoral formation program led by pastors from the LCMS and Latin America. He was ordained in 2008 and served several congregations in Venezuela while teaching at the Bible institute. He attended Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (2012–2014), where he received his S.T.M. degree. In 2015, he accepted a Divine Call to serve as a missionary pastor in the Dominican Republic, where he planted churches, mentored Dominican men studying to become pastors, and taught at Concordia the Reformer Seminary. In his free time, Sergio enjoys biking and playing soccer.

Yoxandris is also from Maturín, where she and Sergio met at church. She graduated from dental school in 2011. After years of practicing dentistry in Venezuela, Yoxandris left her job and accompanied Sergio to serve in the Dominican Republic. She stays busy with nurturing the couple’s three children, Irene, Andrés and Inés; actively helping in the new church plant; and studying dentistry. In her free time, Yoxandris enjoys swimming, painting and making crafts.

Prayers

Pray for the Maitas as they serve in Puerto Rico. Ask God to be with their family as they transition to life in a new country. Pray that God would open the hearts and minds of the people they meet, so that all might come to know Jesus Christ as the Savior. Give thanks to God for the Maitas and their service in this part of the world.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 14 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
