Advanced Theological Degrees
The two seminaries of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod offer advanced theological degrees. Both seminaries are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools.
Master of Arts
The Master of Arts is designed for both clergy and laity. It is especially helpful for Christian men and women who seek to further their knowledge of theology, so they may give appropriate leadership in their congregations and communities.
The purpose of the Deaconess program is to equip women with a general competence in the study of the theology and practice of deaconess ministry. Successful completion of the Deaconess program leads to certification as a Deaconess in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. The Master of Arts and Deaconess program are offered by both seminaries.
Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.)
The Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) enables the student to acquire a specialized knowledge in some field of theological learning and to gain skill in using effectively the tools and results of theological research. By completing the S.T.M. program, qualified students demonstrate the ability to engage in further graduate studies and gain advanced standing towards a Ph.D. program. It is offered by both seminaries.
Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.)
The Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) is the highest professional degree in pastoral ministry. It is designed for pastors of unusual promise and demonstrated ability. It combines classroom and in-context learning in order to enhance the student's ministry. It is offered by both seminaries.
Doctor of Philosophy in Missiology
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Missiology is the highest academic degree in the theory and practice of missiology. It enables the student to acquire advanced academic understanding while integrating the academic dimension with evangelistic and missionary activity. It is especially appropriate for leaders who have the responsibility for analyzing mission contexts and setting strategies. It is offered by Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne.
Doctor of Philosophy in Theology
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Theology program is directed toward development of special competence in one theological discipline in connection with demonstrated competence in each of the other disciplines. The purpose of studying for the Ph.D. is to enable the candidate to achieve mastery of a field of specialization that leads to original research and creative work.
