LCMS President Harrison to address Northern Illinois District Convention
Meeting set for March 9-10 in River Forest

ST. LOUIS—March 7, 2012—The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), will be attending the LCMS Northern Illinois District Convention to bring greetings.

The convention is set for March 9-10 at Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Ill., meeting under the theme, “New Starts. New Believers. Every Congregation…Right Now (2 Cor. 6:2b).” Harrison will preach at the worship service at 4:45 p.m. Friday, March 9.

The LCMS Northern Illinois District encompasses 225 congregations with more than 124,000 baptized members in total.

All 35 LCMS districts hold their triennial conventions this year – beginning with North Dakota's in January and ending with Central Illinois’ in July in Springfield, Ill. The conventions offer opportunities for worship, nurture, inspiration, fellowship and the communication of vital information. They are the districts’ principal legislative assemblies, which amend the districts’ articles of incorporation and bylaws, consider and take action on reports and overtures, and handle appropriate appeals.  Also, each convention will hold elections for president and other top officers.

Each district convention also will see a video presentation from Harrison’s office, called “Witness, Mercy, Life Together: Blessings – Challenges – Opportunities.” The video offers highlights of what the Lord is doing through the LCMS – through congregations, districts and the ministries headquartered at the LCMS International Center in St. Louis. The video spotlights ministry from the past 18 months – beginning when Harrison was elected president of the Synod – told through the lens of the emphasis of the church, “Witness, Mercy, Life Together.”

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors (compared to a not-more-than ceiling of 10.5 percent the previous fiscal year). Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
