Nominations and Elections

LCMS National Convention   •   July 29–Aug. 3, 2023   •   Milwaukee

Regional Vice-Presidents

Nomination Process

Each member congregation of a region (including any non-geographic district congregations in that region) shall have been given opportunity to nominate two (2) ministers of religion-ordained from the clergy roster of the Synod with residence in its designated region as candidates for regional vice-president.

Color-coded nomination ballots for the regional vice-presidents will be mailed in October 2018 to all member congregations in each region, and ballots must be submitted to the Secretary of the Synod’s office between October 2018 and February 2019, and no later than February 20, 2019 (five months prior to convention).

Nomination forms for the regional vice-presidents will not be available online.

Election Process

Voting delegates at convention shall elect by majority vote each regional vice-president (2nd—6th). The election process for the regional vice-presidents shall include the following aspects summarized from Bylaw 3.12.2.7:

  • A separate election will take place for each elected regional position.

  • There will be no opportunity for floor nominations.

  • The five eligible individuals who received the most nominating votes shall form the slate.

  • Voting delegates shall be entitled to vote for one of the candidates from each region.

  • If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast, the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be retained on the ballot.

  • Balloting shall continue with the candidate receiving the least number of votes eliminated until one candidate has received a majority of the votes cast.

  • After all regional vice-presidents are elected, a final election will take place ranking the vice-presidents by separate ballots with a simple majority of voting delegates determining the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth vice-presidents in line of succession.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of the joyful response and generosity of God’s people over the past fiscal year, not more than 10.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors (compared to a not-more-than ceiling of 13.5 percent the previous fiscal year). Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
