Harrison re-elected LCMS President

The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison has been re-elected to a third term as president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod after receiving the majority vote on the first ballot during the June 11-14 election period.

The three nominees for president of Synod were Harrison, the Rev. Dr. Dale A. Meyer and the Rev. Dr. David P.E. Maier. The results of the ballot tallied and reported to the Secretary of the Synod on June 15 by Election-America are as follows:

  • Harrison — 3,507 votes (56.96 percent)
  • Meyer — 2,257 votes (36.66 percent)
  • Maier — 393 votes (6.38 percent)

The 66th Convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod will be held July 9-14, 2016, in Milwaukee at the Wisconsin Center.

The national convention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod shall afford an opportunity for worship, nurture and inspiration, fellowship, and the communication of vital information.

The convention is the principal legislative assemble, which amends the Constitution and Bylaws, considers and takes action on reports and overtures, and handles appropriate appeals. It establishes general positions and policies of the Synod, provides overall program direction and priorities, and conducts business in order to provide responsible service for and on behalf of its members.

2016 Convention Nominations and Elections

Nominations

Prior to its triennial conventions, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod collects nominations for the various officer, board and commission positions to which it must elect individuals for service.

Nomination forms (ballots) are required to be completed so that the Secretary of the Synod and the Committee for Convention Nominations are able to carry out their responsibilities related to the nomination processes.

The Secretary of the Synod is responsible to collect nominations for the President, First Vice-President, regional vice-presidents and all other elected positions that require regional representation.

The Committee for Convention Nominations is responsible to review all nominations collected by the Secretary of the Synod and select slates of candidates for all other elected offices, boards and commissions.

Elections

The Synod presidential election will be conducted prior to the convention. Elections for all other officers, select members of various boards and commissions will be held during the convention.

April 16, 2016

  • Convention Workbook posted on LCMS website (12 weeks prior to convention).
  • Convention Workbook mailed only to delegates, alternates, officers of Synod, members of boards, commissions, and councils.

May 7, 2016

  • Deadline for responses to Convention Workbook Reports and Overtures (9 weeks prior to the Convention).

July 2, 2016

  • Deadline for responses to the First Issue of Today's Business due to floor committee chairmen (1 week prior to convention).

July 9, 2016

  • Convention opens in Milwaukee.
