LCMS World Mission currently works with and supports mission projects of the Silesian Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession; in making Christ’s love known in word and deed and expanding specialized Gospel outreach. The need is urgent as only 30 percent of Czech people belong to a church and many identify themselves as atheists. Mission project funding will support...
Reaching out to youth, young adults and families: The Czech Church is planning weekly meeting and annual evangelism events for college-age youth and families in the nation’s second-largest city, Brno, home to a sizable Lutheran population prior to WW-II. In another initiative, the MISE mission project aims to encourage Christians to speak to young people, predominantly by means of relationship building and sport-based activities. To do this, the project mobilizes people to prayer for unbelievers and encourages and prepares people for evangelism work in places without Lutheran churches. In reaching out to families, an ongoing family conference project has been organized by a grouping of Czech congregations from three cities. The conference for families with children is aimed at helping families in solving vital questions they encounter in areas such as mutual relationships in the family, raising children, family and work, family and leisure time, family and finances, sickness in the family and many others. Through lectures, seminars or discussions, participants learn to solve the problematic situations or to solve arising conflicts in their families while learning to live in accord with Christian values. Lecturers are medical doctors, psychiatrists, theologians and counselors from the Czech Republic and abroad.
Reaching out through media ministry: The goal of a Christian TV show in Bystřice is to broadcast worship services, evangelization meetings, musical performances, Advent concerts and other Christian activities by cable in the Třinec and Těšín region—thus enabling a direct Gospel contact with a broad range of viewers who cannot take part in these activities personally. All transmissions also are telecast via Internet. Due to the 40-year limitations imposed by communist leaders after WW-II, there is a gap in Latvian Christian and Lutheran theological resources. The church operates the “catechetical department,” a division of education, at the University of Ostrava. Through their library project, the Czech Church plans to restock historical theological resources and add new, recent resources to help educate, equip and encourage pastors, university teachers, members of Lutheran congregations and unchurched people using the library.
Providing support for new church starts: In the last three years, thanks to God's great mercy and help, the Czech Church established three new preaching sites and is in the process of transitioning one site in Brno to becoming a congregation. Also recently, an English-speaking congregation in Prague was revived. The Czech Church is continuing to be moved to reach more new people with the Good News of Christ’s Gospel love. They want to establish at least two new preaching sites, one in Kaznějov near Pilsner and another somewhere in the northern part of the Czech Republic. The greatest need is to find places buildings/locations for these new gatherings and the computer and technological resources needed for each new site.
