With independence and democracy in 1974, came complete freedom of religion in Portugal.
LCMS World Mission supports the Portuguese Evangelical Lutheran Church in its efforts to plant new churches, train lay leaders and increase outreach activities. Most recently, the church started a new preaching station in Espinho, near the city of Porto. Members host Bible study and worship services in their homes. Youth meet a few times each month for Bible study and fellowship. A small group of children attend Bible school on Sundays. Two laymen are being trained to lead Bible study and to assist the pastor.
The Portuguese Evangelical Lutheran Church is a sister/partner church of the LCMS and has close ties to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil.
