The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod
With independence and democracy in 1974 came complete freedom of religion in Portugal.
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod supports the Portuguese Evangelical Lutheran Church in its efforts to plant new churches, train lay leaders and increase outreach activities. Most recently, the church started a new preaching station in Espinho, near the city of Porto. Members host Bible study and worship services in their homes. Youth meet a few times each month for Bible study and fellowship. A small group of children attend Bible school on Sundays. Two laymen are being trained to lead Bible study and to assist the pastor.
The Portuguese Evangelical Lutheran Church is a sister/partner church of the LCMS and has close ties to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil.
Currently, no LCMS missionaries reside in this country. To search for missionaries serving in this region in other countries, please visit missionary search database. To learn more about the LCMS global mission team, visit www.lcms.org/missionaries.
A partner church is a church body with whom the LCMS has full altar and pulpit fellowship. Many LCMS partner churches are also members of the International Lutheran council, a worldwide association of confessional Lutheran church bodies. Some LCMS partner churches came into existence through LCMS-supported mission efforts while others have historic roots that pre-date the LCMS or that are sourced in the mission efforts of other Lutheran church bodies.
