David and Barbara Bush -- Serving the Lord in Taiwan

David and Barbara Bush

Serving the Lord in Taiwan

Bio

David and Barbara Bush serve the Lord as missionaries for The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Taiwan. They previously served in Hong Kong and Macau from 2017 to 2022.

David and Barbara work with the China Evangelical Lutheran Church (CELC), the Synod’s partner church in Taiwan, to explore and establish a ministry to the deaf and those with special needs. In this role, David visits with congregations, schools for the deaf and schools for special education to determine their needs and resources and connect them to the CELC. To serve in Taiwan, David will learn the sign language that is used there, since it is different from what is used in the U.S. and Hong Kong.

David was born in Tecumseh, Mich. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English and elementary education from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Ill., and his Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Theological Seminary (CTSFW), Fort Wayne, Ind. He has completed coursework at CTSFW toward his Doctor of Ministry degree. David served as a pastor and missionary to the deaf in several Midwest LCMS congregations. He taught two classes, “Deaf Missions and Ministry” and “American Sign Language,” at CTSFW for 15 years. He retired after 20 years of service as a chaplain for the Air National Guard. David enjoys reading, woodworking, gardening, hiking and photography.

Barbara was born in Bay Shore, N.Y. She earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C. While David was a vicar, he met Barbara at Gallaudet University, and they were married on July 9, 1977. They have four grown children. Barbara worked at Bethesda Lutheran Communities, Fort Wayne, Ind., caring for clients in group homes. In Hong Kong and Macau, she helped her husband communicate God’s love to the people. Barbara likes to ride bicycles and read the Bible.

Prayers

Pray to the Lord to help David and Barbara train people in Taiwan to bring the Gospel to the deaf so they can come to faith in Jesus Christ. Pray also that those who receive the Word will want to be baptized and join in making disciples.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors (compared to a not-more-than ceiling of 10.5 percent the previous fiscal year). Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
