Julie Lutz

Serving the Lord in Papua New Guinea

Julie Lutz and her husband, Dr. Steve Lutz, served God together in Papua New Guinea (PNG) with The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) from 1986 until Steve’s death in June 2010. Steve was a medical missionary, serving at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Enga Province and in remote areas of PNG.

Currently, Julie serves as a mission service coordinator, working with members of the Gutnius Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea to develop ways in which they can better share the Gospel and serve others in their communities. She also connects Lutherans in the United States with ministry opportunities in education, health, HIV/AIDS and community development. The challenges are many among the communities of PNG, including domestic violence, lack of education and rising rates of HIV/AIDS. However, these challenges also present opportunities for Christians to step forward in love and care for their families and neighbors in Christ’s name.

Julie was born in Alexandria, Va., to LCMS teachers/missionaries Ralph and Lola Behrens. She graduated from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb., in 1974 and taught in Lutheran schools in Detroit and Oregon. Steve and Julie have four children: Anton; Paul and his wife Rebecca; Laura and her husband Nathan; and David.

Please pray for Julie as she serves the Lord in Papua New Guinea. Pray God graciously grants her strength and good cheer as she serves as a mission service coordinator. Pray for the people of the Gutnius Lutheran Church in PNG that God makes them one in Him as they reach out in witness and mercy and live together in Christ. Finally, pray that all people in PNG come to trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Let us give thanks to God that Julie serves His children in this part of the world.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of the joyful response and generosity of God’s people over the past fiscal year, not more than 10.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors (compared to a not-more-than ceiling of 13.5 percent the previous fiscal year). Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
