Rev. David and Joyce Erber

Serving the Lord in Africa

Bio

Rev. David and Joyce Erber serve the Lord through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Africa, based in Accra, Ghana.

David serves as a theological educator providing continuing education for pastors in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana. He works to equip the newly appointed Regional Head Pastors with the knowledge and skills they need to mentor the pastors and congregations in their respective regions. The goal is to enable the church presently located in 30 geo/political districts to reach out to the major population centers of the remaining 245 districts in Ghana. David also conducts an ongoing weekly “WhatsApp” workshop for pastors in Ghana on textual study and sermon preparation.

Joyce serves as the regional business manager for Africa. She is responsible for managing the financial and accounting dynamics for 26 LCMS missionaries and 82 mission projects. In addition to serving the missionaries, Joyce also works closely with the other world area business managers and the office staff at the LCMS International Center.

David and Joyce have served as LCMS missionaries since 1986. Before Ghana, the Erbers lived in Nigeria for 25 years. David has served in various church planting, local church leadership training, seminary instruction and mission administration capacities over the years. David and Joyce have three grown children, Luke, Jonathan and Naomi.

Prayers

The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2). Pray for the Erbers as they serve in Africa. Pray they are given wisdom and strength as David participates in training and equipping the next generation of pastors and leaders for the church in Ghana, and as Joyce takes care of the many financial details which enable LCMS missionaries to serve in many countries throughout Africa. Let us give thanks to God that David and Joyce continue to serve His people in this part of the world.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors (compared to a not-more-than ceiling of 10.5 percent the previous fiscal year). Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
