KFUO Radio names new broadcast director

ST. LOUIS, June 11, 2012—The Rev. Rodney E. Zwonitzer has accepted the call from The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) to be director of broadcast services for KFUO Radio.

KFUO is the world’s oldest continuously operating Christian radio station. The LCMS broadcast ministry provides high-quality, distinctively Lutheran programming via KFUO 850 AM radio and 24/7 Internet streaming that includes the programming of KFUO-AM and classical music via classic99.com.

“It's time to pump the airwaves with the Word of God,” said LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison during Zwonitzer’s recent installation service. “This is a wonderful moment.”

Prior to joining KFUO, Zwonitzer served as senior pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Dearborn, Mich., since 1995. He began his service there as pastor in 1991. He was pastor of Peace and Trinity Lutheran Churches, Trail, British Columbia, Canada, from 1988 to 1991.

In addition to his expertise in pastoral ministry, Zwonitzer brings a keen business sense to his new position. From 1971 to 1975, he was executive trainee for Westinghouse in Denver. He then served as marketing director/administrator for Storage Technology Corporation in Louisville, Colo., from 1975-1979 and was product marketing manager for United Technologies/Mostek of Carrollton, Texas, in the years 1979-1984.

Zwonitzer earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1988 from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1971 from the University of Wyoming, Laramie. He is author of the book Testing the Claims of Church Growth (Concordia Publishing House, 2002) and co-founder of the Ephphatha Lutheran Mission Society, which establishes outreach ministry to the deaf and hearing impaired.

“I feel particularly blessed in my new position at KFUO Radio because of the massive potential to reach a large audience of believers, believers in-waiting [and other] listeners with the precious Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Zwonitzer said. “All of the existing technologies and the ones on the near horizon hold even more potential of sharing the riches of the grace of our compassionate God in Christ crucified for the world’s sins.”

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
