The Lutheran church has a long tradition in Belarus, beginning shortly after the Reformation. Unfortunately, so much of the country was destroyed in World War II that only two Lutheran churches remain standing, neither of which are part of the re-emerging Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belarus. Today, there are about 10 Lutheran congregations registered with the state government.
A mission team from The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod began cultivating relationships with Lutherans in Belarus in 2001. Currently, men from the Belarusian church attend leadership training and theological education seminars for lay and pastoral students led by LCMS theological educators and missionaries.
The LCMS also began supporting mercy work in Belarus in 2001, awarding four grants to assist infants and children, and distribute food aid.
