Denmark

  •  Country Summary
  • The Danish Evangelical-Lutheran Free Church was founded in 1855 by N. P. Grunnet in the midst of tension between Awakening Movements and secularism in the state church. During the next two to three decades, the church grew and congregations were established in many parts of Denmark.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod first began work in Denmark around 1900, when an LCMS missionary to Germany, J.M. Michael, moved to Denmark and became the leader of The Evangelical-Lutheran Free Church of Denmark from 1900-1925. His two sons also served as pastors in the church through 1980.

Today, the LCMS continues its altar and pulpit fellowship (sister/partner church relationship) with the Evangelical Lutheran Free Church in Denmark (ELFD), which includes two parishes, five congregations, 127 baptized members and three active pastors. The ELFD has been a partner church of the LCMS since 1882.

  •  Partner Churches
  • A partner church is a church body with whom the LCMS has full altar and pulpit fellowship. Many LCMS partner churches are also members of the International Lutheran council, a worldwide association of confessional Lutheran church bodies. Some LCMS partner churches came into existence through LCMS-supported mission efforts while others have historic roots that pre-date the LCMS or that are sourced in the mission efforts of other Lutheran church bodies.

  •  Missionaries
  • Currently, no LCMS missionaries reside in this country. To search for missionaries serving in this region in other countries, please visit missionary search database. To learn more about the LCMS global mission team, visit www.lcms.org/missionaries.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution differently. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent. Consistent with Synod Board policy, no more than 13.5 percent of a charitable contribution may be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
