The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod began assisting the Lutheran Church in Hungary in 1994 with the placement of three LCMS long-term missionaries in Hungarian Lutheran high schools. Currently, GEO missionaries continue to carry out ministry in high schools as English teachers and relationship builders. Through their ministry, GEO missionaries get to know students and their families while sharing their Christian faith. (GEO missionaries are globally engaged in outreach and serve in locations around the world for terms of 1-2 years.)
The Hungarian Evangelical Lutheran Church is organized into three districts. The Western District is headed by Bishop János Szemerei; the Northern District is headed by Bishop Tamás Fabiny; and the Southern District is headed by Bishop Péter Gáncs, who also serves as general bishop. The Lutheran Church in Hungary reports to have about 300 congregations and 300,000 members.
The LCMS received a designated gift to help furnish a classroom at a refugee center for displaced Yugoslavians.
