•  Country Summary
  • After 40 years of communist oppression, there is now religious freedom for all Slovaks. This freedom is provided for in the constitution and is being respected by the government. Lutherans comprise the second-largest Christian group in Slovakia.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod began work in Slovakia in 1991. LCMS GEO (long-term) missionaries have shared the Gospel in church-related schools and small-group Bible studies; they have used printed materials, radio and television ministry to reach the lost in Slovakia; and they have provided theological materials for Sunday schools and leadership training. Outreach projects have also touched children with disabilities and the Roma (Gypsy) population.

The LCMS began work in Slovakia in 1993, remodeling a center for conferences and youth retreats, and providing food service for the poor.

The Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Slovakia currently reports a baptized membership of 329,117 in 602 congregations and preaching stations, and it has a national staff of 302 ordained pastors and 171 teachers. The church operates nine schools and the Evanjelicka Bohoslovecka Fakulta Seminary.
