Cayman Islands

  •  Country Summary
  • Lutheran mission work in the Cayman Islands began in 2001. During the first four years of the mission, countless pastors and their wives served as short-term partners in the development of the ministry. In 2003, the ministry was registered by the Cayman Islands government as Christ Lutheran Church.

The first full-time pastor of the church was installed in 2005. During his tenure, the name of the congregation was changed to Safe Harbour Lutheran Church. He served the ministry until November 2006. A significant number of retired and active pastors served as preachers and worship leaders during the pastoral vacancy from December 2006 through January 2008.

Today, Safe Harbour is an international Lutheran congregation serving Caymanians, expatriate workers, seasonal residents and visitors.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod began work in Grand Cayman in 2004, when Hurricane Ivan devastated much of the country. Much of Grand Cayman was inundated by five- to six-foot deep flood waters. Thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. Some were uninsured, but most were underinsured. The LCMS awarded disaster grants to the church to repair church buildings and meet needs of church members and communities.

Currently, one LCMS missionary family serves in the Cayman Islands. In addition, the LCMS supports the congregation due to its membership turnover.

Other Lutheran partners that have supported mission work in the Cayman Islands include: Lutheran Hour Ministries, The Schwan Foundation and The Lutheran Church-Canada.
