Rev. Tyler and Yanela McMiller

Serving the Lord in Italy

Bio

The Rev. Tyler and Yanela McMiller serve the Lord through The Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod (LCMS) as missionaries in Eurasia, based in Italy. Tyler is the sole LCMS pastor in Italy, where he provides Word and Sacrament ministry, Bible study and catechism classes, all in Italian, to groups of Lutherans scattered throughout the Peninsula — in Naples, Rome, Florence, Piacenza and Padua. Tyler also mentors three men in Italy who are studying to become Lutheran pastors through an online Lutheran seminary based in Riga, Latvia. Through this work, Tyler’s goal is to help geographically isolated Lutherans across Italy establish house churches, just like in the times of the apostles.

Tyler was born in Waukesha, Wis., although his family served as missionaries in Latin America for 15 years. He received a bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish from Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon, Wis., and a Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind. Prior to attending the seminary, Tyler was a violinist in a Mariachi band (2010–2014) and a GEO missionary to Mexico and the Dominican Republic (2014–2017), which is where he met his wife. In his free time, Tyler enjoys playing the violin and listening to audiobooks during ridiculously long walks.

Yanela was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and she and Tyler most recently attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Des Peres, Mo. Yanela received an education degree from Universidad Dominicana O&M in Santo Domingo. After graduating, she was the director of the Lutheran preschool in Licey, Dominican Republic, and served as the mission secretary for the local Lutheran mission. In her free time, Yanela enjoys cooking and watching movies.

Prayers

Ask God to give Tyler wisdom and insight as he translates Lutheran theology and builds relationships. Pray also that the Holy Spirit would enable the Confessional Lutheran Church of Italy faithfully to proclaim the Gospel in the country, just as the apostles did 2,000 years ago. Let us give thanks to God for Tyler and Yanela’s service to God’s children in this part of the world.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
