LCMS Joint Seminary Fund
The LCMS Joint Seminary Fund, a ministry of the LCMS Foundation, serves our two Concordia seminaries by seeking and securing essential funding that permits flexibility in addressing areas of greatest needs that are indispensible to pastoral education:
- Teaching and researching
- Curriculum and materials development
- Facilities construction and maintenance
- Financial aid to students
- Recruitment of highly qualified faculty and staff
- Providing continuing education and distance opportunities
In turn, our LCMS seminaries prepare pastors who will be called to proclaim God’s Word, Law and Gospel, that works saving faith in lives that will be changed now and eternally!
Dear Partner in the Gospel
This time of the year brings with it many changes. Temperatures become comfortably cooler. Tree leaves are transformed from green to vivid shades of orange, red, and yellow. Crops planted months ago mature and await the harvest. Fall is a time of noticeable change.
Fall is also a time of significant change for hundreds of Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod seminary students and their families. New students have begun their study at our seminaries in St. Louis and Fort Wayne. They have moved, many with families, and are experiencing new surroundings, new routines, new joys, and new challenges. Other students and families are experiencing the changes that accompany the start of their vicarage (internship) year at congregations across our nation. Still other students and families have returned to our seminary campuses to begin the final year of seminary formation in anticipation of receiving a call to serve as a pastor in 2014. Changes abound in the lives of our seminary students and their families at this time of the year.
Our seminary students and their families undertake these changes in the name of our gracious God Who changed everything for us in a wonderful way. Paul speaks of two changes that took place as a result of God’s act of love in Jesus Christ: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21, ESV). Christ, the sinless One, was made to be sin. And we, the sinful ones, became righteous in God’s sight. What an incomprehensible and wonderful change God has brought about “for our sake!”
You also have the opportunity to bring about welcome and wonderful changes in the lives of those preparing to serve as our future pastors. One gift to The LCMS Joint Seminary Fund assists future pastors at both of our seminaries. With this letter, I encourage your support of these men and I thank you in advance for your generosity.
Even in the midst of this season of change, both in the world around us and in the lives of our seminary students, remember that God’s promises do not change. For, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8, ESV). How reassuring that we have this sure and certain hope in the midst of an ever-changing world!
Cordially in Christ,
Rev. Dr. Glen D. Thomas
